Introduction

The department of Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases was established in March 2021.

Infrastructure

The department provides both Outpatient Clinic as well as inpatient care services.

Out Patient Services

The OPD clinic is located at Room 115, First Floor, OPD Complex. Services are provided three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

In addition to the clinic, various procedures such as Ultrasound guided thoracentesis, pleural and thoracic biopsies and lymph node aspirations are also performed on outpatient basis.

Patient Services

Inpatient care is provided in the Male and Female Medical Wards. Patients requiring intensive care are admitted in either the Critical Care ICU (under the Dept of Anaesthesia) or the Medical ICU.

Diagnostic Services

Pulmonary Function Laboratory

The Pulmonary Function Laboratory is present in the OPD Complex (opposite Room 115). Basic spirometry and 6MWT are provided in the laboratory.

Interventional Pulmonology:

The department provides a wide variety of diagnostic and interventional pulmonological services. Bronchoscopy on outpatient basis is done on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Bronchoscopic procedures performed include basic diagnostic video bronchoscopy such as Bronchoalveolar Lavage, Endobronchial Biopsy, Lung biopsy and advanced Endobronchial Ultrasound guided Nodal Biopsies and lung biopsies. Services of Bedside bronchoscopy for ICUs are also provided.

Single port, medical pleuroscopy or thoracoscopy under local anaesthesia is also routinely performed for assessing the pleural cavities.

Interventional bronchoscopic procedures under general anaesthesia are also done. Such procedures include trachea-bronchial stenting, tumour debulking, management of airway stenoses. The department is the first in the north east of India to successfully deploy trachea-bronchial silicone Y stents. It was also the first to perform a therapeutic whole lung lavage under general anaesthesia for a patient suffering from Pulmonary Alveolar Proteinosis.

Academic Activities:

Teaching programmes for undergraduate MBBS students of the Institute. The department conducts regular in-house ward rounds, clinical bedside case discussions for the undergraduate students and residents and faculty. Moreover, there are also regular, informal interdepartmental case discussions.
