The Department of Microbiology has been functioning since June, 2006 in the permanent campus of NEIGRIHMS at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong – 18.

I.                   Services provided :-

(a)    Diagnostic Services :- Clinical Diagnostic Services are being provided to the beneficiaries through the different sections of the department such as Bacteriology (culture, identification & antibiotic susceptibility testing- blood, body fluids. Respiratory samples, exudates, urine & stool), Parasitology (detection of malaria/leishmania/filaria parasites,detection of intestinal parasites including coccidian parasites), Mycobacteriology (Screening for Acid fast bacilli), Immunology (VDRL, ASO, CRP, Widal), Mycology (Culture and isolation of fungal agents), Virology (screening for HBsAg & Anti-HCV). Hospital Infection Surveillance is another activity of the Department. Emergency Laboratory Services is also provided by the Department.

(b)    Integrated Counselling & Testing Centre (ICTC):- Started functioning since Sept., 2008 under NACO. Govt. of India, services is extended to both the self referred & institutional referred clients as part of prevention & control programme of NACO for HIV transmission.

(c)    State Reference Laboratory (SRL) :- NACO has identified the Deptt. of Microbiology for establishment of SRL for External Quality Assessment Scheme  in HIV testing for Meghalaya. The responsibility for development of human resource by giving training   in ICTC activities in Meghalaya has also been entrusted to the SRL, NEIGRIHMS.

(d)    Disease Surveillance :- The Department is also co-operating in IDSP activities with  special reference to Malaria and Meningococcal meningitis in Meghalaya.

II.                Academic activities :-

(a)    Teaching for Under-Graduate Students: - The Department is involved in teaching programmes for MBBS, B.Sc. Nursing through structured lecture schedules, hands on practical exercises and informative demonstration classes.

(b)    Training of Post-Graduate Students: - The Department has initiated the PG Training programme from May 2009 with admission of 2 (Two) Post-Graduate Students. A structured PG programme comprising of Journal Clubs, Seminars, Culture/Technique Seminars and Inter-Department seminars, case discussion etc. are the essential components of Post-Graduate training. Emphasis is given to bench work and hands on training so as to enable the Post-Graduate Students to become proficient with the practical nuances of diagnostic Microbiology.

 

(c)    Training of Senior Resident Doctors, Laboratory Technicians: - The Department is also actively involved in the training of SRD and Laboratory Technicians.

2. Hospital Surveillance = 154 nos.

3. Designated Microscopic Centre (DMC) :- Started w.e.f.  May, 2008 under RNTCP    for  

    demonstration of  acid fast bacillus in the sputum samples from both the OPD and IPD

     patients. Following service was provided during the reporting period :-
