Academics

          The Department is involved in regular ward discussions, seminars, journal review and interdepartmental case discussions, seminars.  The Department is also involved in teaching programmes of B Sc Nursing students of the College of Nursing.  Recently MBBS course have also been started in NEIGRIHMS and the Faculty and Senior Resident of the Department are engaged actively in teaching the Under Graduate students by taking both theory and practical classes.  Presently the 2nd Year MBBS students are on clinical postings in both the Wards.

          The Department is regularly organizing in-house teaching programme for the benefit of Resident Doctors both Senior & Junior.  The schedule is as follows :

(1) Journal Club : Every fortnightly on Tuesday at 2:30 PM by a Senior Resident for one hour.  The session is chaired by one of the Faculty members of the Department

(2) Case presentation : Every fortnightly on Friday at 2:30 PM by a Junior Resident Doctor.

 The above mentioned teaching programmes are also actively participated by other Departments like Pediatrics depending upon their conveniences.

There are minor variations in the above mentioned schedule in case of Medicine Unit II as Dr. K G Lynrah also involved as the Endoscopist and training the Senior Resident regarding the endoscopy.  The Department’s faculty is involved in Under Graduate Teaching programme by taking (i) Clinics and (2) theory classes.  Every day the classes started at 10:00 AM and continue till 1:00 PM.  The following Faculty and Resident were involved in taking these classes,   (1) Dr. M K Goswami, (2) Dr. K G Lynrah,  (3) Dr. M M Thabah, (4) Dr. Purabi Borah (5) Dr. R Barman.

Services

The Department of General Medicine runs OPD six days a week from Monday to Saturday. The Department caters services for Respiratory, Endocrinology/ Metabolic, Rheumatology, Hematological, Nephrology, Neurological and Infectious diseases.

After the lone faculty of Gastroenterology left the Institute, the Gastroenterology services in relation to patient’s care and others like investigations are being provided by the Department of Medicine including the Endoscopy.

The Indoor services were started from 14th May 2007

          Presently the Department is divided into two Units for better patients care and services.  Each Unit have got a bed strength of 34 which includes both male and female.  The endoscopic examination facilities is attached with Medicine Unit II located in (-1) level of the Hospital building.

          6 (six) numbers of Haemodialysis machines have also been installed in the third floor of the Hospital building near the ICU complex and the services                                    are expected to start very shortly.  As there is no Nephrologist presently working in NEIGRIHMS these machines are under the Department of Medicine.

Ongoing Research Projects

1.       A comparative study of Uncomplicated Malaria (Falciparum and Falciparum with Vivax) with quinine Monotherapy Vs Combination Therapy with quinine and Artemesinin.

2.       A Hospital based study on effect of Pulmonary Function Test and exercise tolerance in patients of COPD & other Diseases.

          The above mentioned research project had been received reviewed by the concerned authority of the Institute like Institutional Ethics Committee, subject to final approval.

1.  Presented a paper entitles “Swine flu: a challenge to public health” under the aegis of Meghalaya Medical Services Association at Shillong Club on 20.09.09.

2.  Presented a paper on “Hypertension and pregnancy” at VIIth  North East Zonal Meeting of CSI held in Dibrugarh on 17.11.09 to 19.11.09.

3.  Chairperson of a scientific session (Hepatology) of National Annual Conference of Indian Railways Association of Physicians of India held in North Eastern Frontier Railways Headquarters at Maligoan; Guwahati.

4.  Chairperson of a scientific session in the CME on AIDS held in Down Town Hospital (Guwahati) on 11.11.09.

5.  Chairperson of the Scientific session on sudden heart attack at 11th International Annual Conference of Emergency Medicine Society of India held at Guwahati in November 2009.

6   Delivered a lecture on “Hypertension; various aspects of management” under the aegis of Association of Physicians of India; Meghalaya State Chapter at Pinewood Hotel on 16.01.10.

Resident Training

1.  PG seminar is held regularly in the Department which includes journal club, case discussion etc.  Seminar were also held in liaison with the Department of Pediatric for the benefit of the Resident Doctors.

Community Services

1.       Dr. M Danny Hek, SR and Dr. Numal Momin, SR participated in the health Mela organized by the Meghalaya Pensioners Association held at Pdengshakhap, Jaintia Hills District on 24th October 2009.

2. Health camp organized for the benefit of staff and family members of CBI Office, Shillong on 24th October 2009 was attended by Resident Doctors and Faculties of the Department.

3. Dr. Rintu Barman and Dr. Michi Gumbo participated in a one day sensitization training of officials and NGOs on “Empowerment at Elderly” held on 1st March 2010 at the Conference Hall at Raitong Building, Main Secretariat.

4.       Diabetes detection and Follow up camp was organized on the occasion of World Diabetes Day on 14th November 2009 at Army Cantonment Board was attended by Senior Residents and Faculties of the Department.
