Introduction

The department of Pediatric Disciplines is a full fledged department which started in January 2005.

The department is presently trying to fulfill the multi-pronged objectives as laid down in the Bye-laws of the Institute by

• providing practical and job oriented skills to the residents and staff nurses,
• providing both graduate and post-graduate level training,
• advanced and specialized health care to the children from 0-18 years of age,
• acting as a referral unit for the state of Meghalaya as well as other states of North East India,
• training programs at medical and para-medical levels,
• conducting research and other studies related to children as well as other health related topics, and
• assisting at governmental level for health planning and developmental aspects.

Patient Services

The patient care services offered by the department consist of the following:

• OPD: Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
• Vaccination: Monday through Saturday as per Universal Immunization program and Indian Academy of Pediatrics guidelines.
• In patient services: This constitutes 24 hours coverage in the following areas
  • General ward (18 bedded)
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (13 bedded): This unit is equipped with 8 pediatric ventilators, one flexible fibreoptic bronchoscope, sufficient numbers of multiparameter monitors, pulse oxymeters, one FiO2 monitor, two defibrillator, sufficient numbers of infusion pumps etc. for the care of the critically sick child.
    It caters to patients with meningococcaemia, meningococcal meningitis, other forms of meningitis with complications, empyema, respiratory failure due to various causes, severe complicated malaria, severe pneumonia, bacterial sepsis with shock, status epilepticus, hypertensive urgency / emergency and encephalitis
  • Neonatal Services: This included attendance of normal newborn deliveries, delivery of high risk babies, care of term babies, preterm babies, small for date babies, extreme prematurity, babies with respiratory distress, meconium aspiratin syndrome, birth asphyxia, sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, respiratory failure, congenital heart diseases etc
  • Emergency Services: The majority of the sick patients are received through the emergency services such as meningitis, malaria, respiratory failure, empyema, new born deliveries, status epilepticus, diarrhea and dehydrati

   • Regular seminars on Pediatric Intensive Care Unit(PICU )topics for the PICU and pediatric general ward nurses as well as labour room nurses
   • Training of Casualty medical officers and Casualty Junior Residents

Research Projects

Currently year the department is involved in the following research activities:

1. Neurodevelopmental disabilities among children in India: An International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) study
2. A study of effectiveness of pharmacotherapy in Empyema thoracis among inpatients of Pediatrics department in a tertiary care teaching hospital & its correlation with microbiological results” (no 21/09)
