 Introduction:

The Department of Biochemistry started under the Clinical laboratory Services under the department of Pathology in 2001. The department became independent in 2007 with department with the joining of the Senior Resident Doctors. Fully functional department started on July 2008.

The department of Biochemistry in one of the most instrumental department in the institute providing laboratory investigations for the patient care. Currently more than 250 patients visits biochemistry laboratory per day for clinical investigations.

From the month of March 2009, the department has started assaying, hormones, tumour markers, vitamins etc on regular basis after acquiring, Immuno-diagnostic system.

Right now the department of Biochemistry has most of the clinical equipments for clinical laboratory as given below:

·        Fully automated clinical chemistry analyzers (Erba XL600 & Erba XL300) – 2

·        Semiautomatic clinical chemistry analysers – 8

·        Electrolyte analysers ( Eschweiler Combiline ISE Analyzers & Easylite plus  ) – 4

·        Fully automated Electrochemiluminescence system (Beckman-Coulter Access 2) – 1

·        Clinical centrifuge – 4

·        Water purifying system for Type I water (Milipore)– 1

·        High speed refrigerated centriguge (Thermo-Fischer)– 4

·        Spectrophotometer – 1

·        Electrophoresis system – 2

The department is as taking part in the different institutional and regional academic activities on a regular basis for the development of medical man power in the region as per the mandate of the institute.

As per the research is concerned the department is now taking part in doing tumor marker studies in collaboration with department of Oncology, Urology and Surgery. On introduction of the equipments the department envisages the basic research on cancer biology and reproductive biology in collaboration with other clinical departments.
